Inauguration night 1993. President Clinton and I record impressions of his first few hours in office.

This shot did not make the book. On inauguration night, January 20, 1993, President Clinton waves to the crowd as he leaves one of twelve inaugural balls he and Hillary attended that night. I’m following along with my briefcase, shown here under his hand. Photo credit: Official White House Photograph

This shot did not make the book. It’s fuzzy and too dark, probably because I took it. Here is the Queens’ Bedroom on the second floor of the White House residence, where Christy and I once slept over as described on page 552. Photo credit: Taylor Branch

This shot did not make the book. On inauguration morning, January 20, 1993, President-elect Clinton and Vice President-elect Gore talk with me in the Blair House guest residence across from the White House. We had just returned from the national prayer service at Metropolitan AME Church, and we were still revising Clinton’s inaugural address. His college friend Tommy Caplan is shown at left, with Caplan’s father on the right. Photo credit: Official White House Photograph

This shot did not make the book. Again, the picture is blurry from a camera in my hands. It shows President Clinton’s desk in the second floor Treaty Room on a night when I arrived for a recording session, probably in 1999. The desk is typically clear at the center but strewn with mementos and artifacts around the perimeter, from Chelsea in ballet on the left to autographed baseballs on the right. This is another extra shot from January 20, 1993, in the Blair House guest residence. Hillary is about to get dressed for the inauguration ceremony. I’m about to rejoin editing sessions for Clinton’s inaugural address. Photo credit: Official White House Photograph

This shot did not make the book. A beaming Jessye Norman leaves the platform after singing for President Clinton’s second inauguration on January 20, 1997, as described on page 417 and after. Vice President Gore is to her right, and First Lady Hillary Clinton is in the pink coat. I took this picture with a disposable panoramic camera, from a prime seat on the fourth or fifth row. This shot did not make the book. On inauguration night in 1993, President Clinton introduces himself to a butler in the 3rd-floor Solarium. We had arrived there at the end of his initial tour of the White House residence. Shortly after this picture was taken, we sat in the Solarium to record an interview about Clinton’s impressions of his first hours in office for an article in LIFE Magazine. An extra shot of the Jefferson Memorial bird feeder, presented to President Clinton by my dad (left, next to my mom) on March 30, 1996. Christy is in the middle, and our daughter Macy peers inside on the right. Photo credit: Official White House Photograph

Another spare shot from March 30, 1996. My whole family gathers round as President Clinton leans over to inspect the inner workings of the Jefferson Memorial bird feeder on the White House South Lawn. Photo credit: Taylor Branch

On Oct. 31, at the Texas Book Festival, I spoke to a crowd that filled the House Chamber of the Texas Legislature in Austin. Old Clinton friends turned up who had worked with us in the 1972 McGovern presidential campaign, including former Land Commissioners Bob Armstrong and Garry Mauro. One of them, ad exec Judy Tribulsi, brought the attached photo of key office staff members: (l-r) Dorothea ?, Ruth Fisher, Nancy Williams, me (with red hair!), and Lisa Rogers.
